Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary)

Carlsbad (Czech: Karlovy Vary) the largest Czech Spa is located in a picturesque valley of the Teplá River by its confluence with the Ohře River. The town is surrounded by forest hills. According to a popular legend, the hot springs were discovered by the Czech king and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV while hunting.

Carlsbad was built on terraced ground and gives the town a particularly attractive appearance. The elegant scenery of Carlsbad is composed of beautiful parks and avenues and of Spa woods spread on nearby hillsides. The Spa center is formed by numerous sanatoria, guest houses, Hotels and colonnades with a dozen natural springs giving medicinal effects.

Carlsbad Spa treatment is based on drinking hot mineral spring water. The spring of “Vřídlo” (Sprudel) has the warmest mineral water (72 °C). The Carlsbad thermal water is used also for baths and for irrigation. Natural curative sources are used in combination with the latest medical methods.

Amongst Carlsbad's other attractions is its unofficial “Thirteenth Spring” - from which the original herbal liqueur Becherovka is made as well as the International Film Festival which is held there annually at the beginning of July.
